How to use the data explorer

The National Stigma Report Card Data Explorer presents the findings of the inaugural Our Turn to Speak survey. Using this website, you will be able to explore the combined data provided by 1,912 adult participants who completed the survey between October 2019 and March 2020.

What can I do with this Data Explorer website?

The National Stigma Report Card Data Explorer offers five options for exploring the data:

  1. The overview section uses video, charts, and summaries to provide a snapshot of highlight findings about stigma and discrimination across the 14 life domains
  2. In participant characteristics, you will find the mental health and sociodemographic characteristics of all participants who completed the survey
  3. The participants by location section features an interactive map of Australia that allows you to delve into the highlight findings for each state and territory
  4. By clicking onto each life domain, you will be able to identify the top three instances of experienced and anticipated stigma and discrimination, and withdrawal from opportunities, relevant to that aspect of participants’ lives<
  5. When you compare life domains, you will be able to plot the average rates of agreement with instances of experienced and anticipated stigma and discrimination, and withdrawal from opportunities, for two or more different life domains

Participants by location

This section features an interactive map of Australia that allows you to delve into the highlight findings for each state and territory.

Select a state or territory to learn about:

  • The sociodemographic and mental health characteristics of participants residing in that state/territory
  • The life domains selected by participants residing in that state/territory as being subjected to the most frequent and most impactful experiences of stigma and discrimination

Life domains

On the left-hand panel, you will see the 14 life domains investigated by the Our Turn to Speak survey. By clicking onto each life domain, you will be shown:

  • The three statements describing experiences of stigma and discrimination that the most participants agreed with, from “strongly agree” to “slightly agree”
  • The three statements describing anticipated stigma and discrimination that the most participants agreed with, from “strongly agree” to “slightly agree”
  • The three statements describing withdrawal from opportunities that the most participants agreed with, from “strongly agree” to “slightly agree”

These sections will also allow you to explore the sociodemographic and mental health characteristics of participants who identified each life domain as one of three life domains that had been most affected by their experience of stigma and discrimination. You will be able to break this down by:

  • Age group
  • Gender identity
  • Primary mental health issue
  • Sexual orientation
  • Relationship status
  • Educational achievement
  • Employment status
  • Living situation
  • Health status
  • Ancestry or cultural group
  • Religious or spiritual affiliation, and
  • The frequency of participants’ experiences of stigma and discrimination in each domain from “very rarely” to “very frequent”

Compare life domains

In this section, you will be able to compare between two and 14 life domains in terms of how many participants agreed they had experienced stigma and discrimination in those domains.

Specifically, you will be able to compare:

  • How many participants, on average, agreed from “strongly agree” to “slightly agree” that they had experienced stigma and discrimination in that domain
  • How many participants, on average, agreed from “strongly agree” to “slightly agree” that they anticipated future stigma and discrimination in that domain, and
  • How many participants, on average, agreed from “strongly agree” to “slightly agree” that they had withdrawn from opportunities relevant to that domain
